Peace of Mind: When a Home Inventory Makes Sense

We were recently hired by someone who told us she was convinced she was going to die within the year (she was 92 but seemed to be in excellent shape). Her Brooklyn apartment was tidy and neat but included numerous extensive collections. She had a cool collection of millefiori paperweights (the ones with intricate floral designs suspended inside), a wall full of colorful masks, a huge collection of pens, and several other collections.

At the consultation, she told us that her two kids didn’t appreciate any of her collections. She said she didn’t think there was a lot of value, but she didn’t want her kids to just junk it all. So she hired us to complete an inventory of it all, with instructions for how she wanted each item sold, donated, or distributed.

At Paper Moon Moves, we know that your belongings are more than just things - they tell the story of your life. Whether you’re planning ahead, managing an estate, or preparing for a move, having a clear record of what you own can bring order and calm to times of change. That’s where a home inventory comes in.

Why a Home Inventory Matters

A home inventory is a comprehensive list, often with photos and descriptions, of the contents of your home. It can be tailored to your particular needs. Some clients need a detailed inventory, others basic. Some want digital copies, others paper. Whatever the format, it’s a smart way to stay organized and protect your assets.

Some of the more common reasons our clients choose to create one include:

  • Estate Planning: For executors and heirs, an inventory provides clarity and reduces the emotional burden of sorting through a loved one’s belongings.

  • Insurance Protection: In the event of theft, fire, or flood, documentation makes all the difference. A well-organized inventory helps ensure accurate claims and fair compensation.

  • Divorce Settlements: When dividing assets, a neutral and comprehensive list minimizes misunderstandings and streamlines the process.

  • Preparing for a Move: An inventory simplifies packing, labeling, and distribution, saving time and stress.

Customized for Your Needs

Every household is different, and so is every inventory. Some clients want a simple spreadsheet to keep track of high-value items; others need a comprehensive digital catalog with photographs, item values, and categories. Our team at Paper Moon Moves tailors each project to your goals, your timeline, and your comfort level.
