A New Book Explores the Big Questions About Aging, Housing, and Home

We're delighted to announce the publication of Aging in Place Conversations: The Housing Edition, featuring a chapter by Paper Moon Moves co-founder Katie Hustead.

Where will you live as you grow older? Will your current home continue to meet your needs? What happens when maintaining that home becomes more difficult? And how do you begin preparing for changes that may still be years away?

These are some of the important questions explored in Aging in Place Conversations: The Housing Edition, a new collaborative book featuring insights from professionals across the aging field, with a foreword by Bob Blancato, a nationally recognized advocate for older adults.

The book looks beyond the question of where we will live to consider how we want to live as we age. Its contributors address a wide range of topics, including:

  • How can we adapt our homes to remain safe and independent as our needs change?

  • What financial decisions should we be making now to prepare for the future?

  • How can technology help us maintain independence?

  • How do we navigate the challenges of caregiving and dementia?

  • What responsibilities do we have to the people—and pets—who depend on us?

  • How do our emotional attachments to our homes and possessions influence the decisions we make?

Katie's chapter, "More Than a Move: Navigating Downsizing, Decisions, and the Contents of a Life," draws on her years of experience helping older New Yorkers and their families navigate downsizing, relocation, and estate clear-outs.

At Paper Moon Moves, we know that deciding what to do with a lifetime of belongings is rarely just a logistical exercise. Our possessions carry memories, family histories, and emotional meaning. Making decisions about them can be one of the most difficult parts of preparing for a move—or simply preparing for the next stage of life.

Katie's contribution explores this deeply personal side of downsizing and the importance of approaching these decisions with thoughtfulness, compassion, and a practical plan.

For Katie, the publication also represents a personal milestone. She has long wanted to write a book, and contributing to this collection is an exciting step in that direction.

We're grateful to the editors who brought together such a knowledgeable group of contributors and created an opportunity for important conversations about aging, independence, and home.

Ultimately, Aging in Place Conversations: The Housing Edition reminds us that planning for the future isn't simply about finding the right place to live. It's about understanding our priorities, anticipating our needs, and making thoughtful choices that support the life we want to lead.
